Mangalitsa Piglets - Farrowed June 1, 2024
Ridgemeade Farm is proud to be a breeder of the rare Mangalitsa pig and a member of the Mangalitsa Breed Organization and Registry. Our line of Mangalitsas date to importation from Hungary by Heath Putnam in the mid 2000s.
Our pigs are raised in our woodland which makes up half of our farm. They eat non-GMO feed, we also incorporate pasture grass and acorns, hazelnuts, and chestnuts from our property into their feed. Seasonally, the pigs also feast on apples, pears, and peaches.
We choose to finish our pigs on spent brewers grain as a supplement to the above mentioned nuts.
The Mangalitsa pig is one of the rarest, heritage breeds of pig, and sought after as much as it’s younger cousin, the Iberico Pig from spain. They are bred and raised for both their meat and their exceptional fat. While this pig is ideal for charcuterie, its meat is the wagu of pork.
The meat is a bright red in color with marbling. Even after being cooked, Mangalitsa pork remains exceptionally juicy, tender, and marbled.
_____
The Mangalitsa pig is a true heritage breed, with a rich history dating back to 19th-century Hungary. Bred for flavor and quality, these woolen pigs are known for their marbled, juicy meat, which remains tender and flavorful even after cooking. At Ridgemeade Farm, we're proud to carry on the tradition of raising the ultra-rate and ultra-premium Mangalitsa pigs.
We provide them with plenty of room to roam and forage in our woodland, allowing them to express their natural behaviors and live their best lives. This holistic approach to farming not only produces superior pork but also promotes the health and well-being of our animals and the land they graze on.
Whether you're a seasoned farmer a home cook or a professional chef looking for the best-quality pork, Ridgemeade Farm has you covered. Our Mangalitsa pork products, from sausages to bacons to hams, are a true testament to the artistry of traditional farming practices and the unparalleled flavor of heritage-bred meat.
